It was Saturday, normally reserved for shopping in the Wright household. Richard’s father was near the phone when it rang. ‘I’ll get it, Pauline,’ he called through to the kitchen, where she was putting their purchases away.

He picked up the set and after a second said, ‘Hang on, son.’ He shouted for Pauline to come through before saying, ‘I’m going to put you on speakerphone, so we can both hear you.’

‘Before you do, check your mobile, I’ve sent some photos attached to a text.’

Richard pressed speakerphone on his mobile, and seconds later Sofia heard the voices of both her lover’s parents greeting their son.

‘Hi, Ma, hi, Pa,’ he greeted them. ‘The snaps I sent you are of me and of the captivating witch who has cast a spell over me and is holding me prisoner in her castle.’

‘Oy, Richard,’ Sofia protested. ‘Don’t go telling fibs. Please don’t believe him,’ she pleaded, ‘he arrived here unexpectedly and we can’t get rid of him.’

‘Hah! You haven’t been trying very hard,’ Richard retorted.

‘Would one of you two comedians cease your routine for long enough to explain exactly what is going on. And try to stick to some semblance of the truth.’

‘Yes, Pa,’ he replied and laughed. ‘Sofia, you’ll have to excuse him,’ Richard told her, ‘he can get very grumpy at times, especially if he’s been dragged round the supermarket. Anyway, it’s quite simple, even for you oldsters. I met Sofia by chance and discovered she needed help with a building project. It’s quite a big job and as I was at a loose end I volunteered to help. We’ve made a good start but as of yesterday we’d only finished the first phase. In the course of that,’ he glanced at Sofia as he spoke, ‘we’ve got to know one another really well.’

He gestured for Sofia to speak. ‘Hello, Mr and Mrs Wright, I’m Sofia. What Richard is trying to say, and not doing it very well, is that I have fallen in love with your son, and he assures me that he loves me too. I’m still not sure whether to believe him, though.’

‘I might have to think up some way of proving it,’ Richard muttered, only to receive a savage dig in the ribs.

‘That is great news, Sofia,’ Mrs Wright responded, ‘but we’d already guessed that something of the sort was going on after Richard’s previous phone call. He sounded much better and far happier than he has done for ages. I take it that he’s told you about the dreadful thing that happened to him last year?’

‘I’ve told her everything, Ma. Sofia and I have no secrets.’

‘That’s as it should be,’ his mother was saying when they heard his father exclaim, ‘Wow, Pauline, take a look at these.’

There was a short silence and then Mrs Wright spoke again. ‘Your father has just opened the photos, Richard. You look really well, very happy, and Sofia is lovely.’

They chatted for a few minutes, and before saying goodbye, Sofia reassured them, ‘I’ll make sure he phones you again soon.
